Changing Lives provides supported accommodation across Newcastle upon Tyne, giving people a safe and stable place to live alongside support to help them move forward.
Across Newcastle, we provide different types of supported accommodation for adults with a range of experiences and support needs. This includes mixed-gender and single-gender accommodation, as well as specialist accommodation for women with children.
How you access a place varies between services. Some accept direct referrals, while others are accessed through Newcastle City Council or another professional. Each service below explains who it supports and how to get help.
We provide a range of supported accommodation across Newcastle for adults with different experiences and support needs. This includes mixed-gender and single-gender accommodation, as well as self-contained and dispersed accommodation within the local community.
Two of our Newcastle services accept direct referrals and provide specialist support for:
In total we run eleven supported accommodation services across Newcastle. The remaining nine are accessed through Newcastle City Council rather than directly through us.
Specialist accommodation for women aged 18 and over who are in recovery from drug or alcohol use, and their children under 10, across Newcastle and Gateshead. You can contact us directly to ask about a place.
Temporary dispersed accommodation in ordinary flats and houses, for women and men who have additional needs that can make mainstream refuge services difficult to access. You can contact us directly.
A range of other supported housing across Newcastle, including dispersed accommodation in ordinary streets. Referrals for these services are made through Newcastle City Council.
Some of our supported accommodation services in Newcastle accept direct referrals. Where this is available, you can contact the service yourself, or ask a professional, friend or family member to make the initial contact on your behalf.
For services that do not accept direct referrals, referrals are made through Newcastle City Council’s Housing Advice Centre.

Yes. You do not have to be sleeping rough to need supported accommodation. We support people facing the challenges of homelessness, including people who may be sofa surfing, living somewhere unsafe or insecure, fleeing domestic abuse, or otherwise at risk of homelessness.
Some of our supported accommodation in Newcastle can accommodate women with children under the age of 10. This is not available across all of our services, so it is important to check the eligibility information for the accommodation you are interested in.
It depends on the service. Some of our supported accommodation in Newcastle accepts direct referrals, meaning you can contact the service yourself or be referred by another professional or organisation. Other services are accessed through Newcastle City Council. Each service listed on this page explains how referrals work and who you need to contact.
How long you can stay depends on the service and your individual circumstances. In many of our supported accommodation services, people can stay for up to two years while they work towards greater independence and a longer-term home.
Using drugs or alcohol does not automatically prevent you from accessing supported accommodation. If you need support with your substance use, our teams can help you access specialist services, alongside harm reduction advice, additional wellbeing support and, where appropriate, NHS treatment and support.
