Environment and Sustainability

Working together to reduce our impact and create lasting positive change for people and communities.

Caring for people, communities and the environment

At Changing Lives, we recognise that caring for the environment is part of supporting people and communities. We aim to deliver services that are environmentally sustainable, socially responsible and make good use of our resources.

From reducing unnecessary travel to reusing materials and making our buildings more efficient, we want sustainable choices to become part of everyday life across our organisation.

Building a more sustainable future

Our ambition is to achieve net zero carbon emissions and become a minimum waste organisation by 2050. The plan will help us identify priorities, measure progress and strengthen our approach over time.

Reducing our carbon footprint

We work to reduce the environmental impact of delivering our services by minimising unnecessary travel and encouraging sustainable ways of working. Where appropriate, we use online meetings and digital communication to stay connected. When travel is needed, we encourage public transport, car sharing, walking and cycling. We also support staff to make practical changes in their day-to-day work, including saving energy, conserving water and reducing waste.

Using resources responsibly

We prioritise reducing consumption, reusing resources and recycling wherever possible, alongside responsible disposal of items that can no longer be used. This includes reducing printing, using digital systems where appropriate and working with landlords, facilities teams and local partners to improve recycling opportunities at our services. Environmental considerations also inform our purchasing decisions. Where suitable options offer value for money, we look for recycled and sustainably sourced materials and suppliers who can demonstrate a commitment to sustainability.

Making our buildings more efficient

We promote responsible use of energy and water across our service locations. Working with premises teams, landlords and energy suppliers, we seek opportunities to reduce consumption and improve efficiency. This includes reviewing energy use, encouraging sensible heating and lighting practices, and exploring renewable energy options where feasible.

Connecting people with their local environment

Environmental activities can benefit people as well as the places where they live. Where local opportunities allow, we encourage involvement in community gardening, caring for shared green spaces and environmental volunteering. Alongside their environmental benefits, these activities can help people build skills, confidence and connections with others, while creating welcoming spaces and a sense of belonging.

Continuing to improve

We know that becoming more sustainable takes ongoing work. As our environmental plan develops, we will share more about our priorities, progress and the practical changes happening across Changing Lives.
