Prime Minister Andy Burnham today runs the Great North Run for Changing Lives today, helping raise funds for our front-line services supporting people facing the challenges of homelessness.
He’s be sporting Changing Lives colours for the 13.1-mile route from Newcastle to South Shields, joining our team and thousands of runners taking part in one of the North East’s biggest days of the year.
Following his visit to Changing Lives
On the 19th August, we welcomed Andy to our supported accommodation service in Newcastle. He met people using the service and heard about the support they had received, as well as speaking with colleagues about their work.
The visit came as the Government launched its “Everyone In for Christmas” drive. We welcomed the focus on helping people off the streets and highlighted the ongoing support people need once they have somewhere safe to stay.
Explaining why he is running for Changing Lives today, Andy Burnham said:
“I’m running the 45th Great North Run for Changing Lives because I’ve seen the difference they make with my own eyes.
“A few weeks back I visited Alex’s Place in Newcastle to launch our drive to offer everyone a route off the streets by Christmas. I sat down with residents over a cup of tea and heard what it actually takes to rebuild a life once you’ve lost everything – not just a roof, but people who stick with you while you find your feet again.
“That’s what Changing Lives does.
“Tackling homelessness is a moral mission for me. It’s why I promised to end rough sleeping on my first day as PM, and why I’m proud to pull on a Changing Lives shirt today.
“If you can spare a few quid, please chip in and support them.”
Supporting people beyond the immediate crisis
At Changing Lives, we work alongside people facing homelessness and the challenges connected to it. Our services bring together housing, recovery and wellbeing support, help with employment, and specialist support for people affected by abuse, exploitation and the criminal justice system.
We take time to understand what matters to each person, building support around their circumstances and the future they want for themselves.
