Our ISVA within our IRIS Team Charlotte supports women to navigate reporting sexual violence they've experienced. Charlotte told us about this support, and what makes her role unique.
Explain a bit more about your role.
I'm an Independent Sexual Violence Advocate (ISVA), and I have been with Changing Lives for ten months. My role is to provide specialist support and guidance to women reporting current or historical sexual violence through the Criminal Justice System.
What makes your role unique?
I have undertaken specialist training to qualify as an ISVA. My role is unique as I can tailor my support to the needs of the individual. I provide impartial information to women about all of their options such as reporting to police, accessing a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), and specialist support services like pre-trial therapy and sexual violence counselling.
Why are you passionate about doing the work you do?
I'm passionate about my ISVA role as I love to see the difference in someone from when we start working together to when they are ready to finish working with me. It is a privilege to be a part of someone's healing and recovery journey. There have been many achievements within this role, but the one that stands out is engaging with a client who have given up on services and being able to give them hope.
Anything else you’d like to add?
It has been invaluable to work as a part of the dedicated IRIS team. I am grateful to be able to reflect and discuss my cases with my colleagues, who support me in finding the best course of action.
