Changing Lives is delighted to have been chosen as one of the charities set to receive funding from the British Airways Better World Community Fund.
The charity could receive a minimum of £14,000 - thanks to match funding from the airline - which will be used to tackle the rising cost of living which has had a devastating impact on people with existing vulnerabilities, many of whom were already deeply affected by experiences of poverty and disadvantage.
An initial crowdfunding target of £7,000 has been set by Changing Lives, which will be doubled only if the organisation is successful in obtaining this amount.
All of the funding which is raised will help to support people through delivering food parcels to those experiencing social and economic deprivation and by paying utility bills for those who face a winter with no heating or hot water. It will also pay for essential travel so children can continue to stay in education, and adults can continue to travel to work.
Speaking about the importance of the funding, Senior Fundraising Manager, Abby Robinson, said: “Rapidly increasing food and energy costs coupled with changes to the tax and benefits system is creating a perfect storm for the people we support, excluding them from society and pushing them further towards a life of extreme poverty.
“Already, we are seeing a devastating picture for many people we work with. Our services are reporting an 80% increase in the number of people who are struggling to make ends meet; often unable to afford to buy food, pay their rent and utilities bills, or meet essential transport costs such as travelling to work or paying a bus fare to take their children to school.
“This funding could really make a significant difference to the people we support, and we are grateful to have been considered for it. Now we need to spread the word far and wide to ensure we raise our target of £7,000.”
British Airways set up the Better World Community Fund to help organisations who are supporting social mobility, driving opportunity for education and employability in disadvantaged communities and supporting individuals from ethnic minorities as well as providing opportunities for girls in STEM.
